The Mathematics department has several awards which it gives
during each academic year.
They are
the Sally Pence Award, the Carolyn Soward Bunyan Award,
the Robert B. Royster Award, the Cliff Swauger Jr. Summer Graduate Fellowship,
the Max Steckler Fellowship and the
J.C. Eaves Scholarship.

Sally Pence Award
Sally Pence, a UK faculty member interested in encouraging prospective
teachers of mathematics, established a fund several years ago to provide
recognition to sophomore or senior mathematics or secondary math education
majors who have expressed their intention of becoming a teacher. Applicants
for the award must have a overall standing of 3.0 and a standing in
mathematics of 3.3. They must be in good standing with the University and
be a good University citizen. Application is in the fall of the sophomore
or junior year and selected applicants are presented the award at the
annual spring awards ceremony held at the Math House. The amount of the
award is 100 dollars.
Carolyn Soward Bunyan Award
This award was established in 1992 in memory of her brother C.G. Soward.
Mrs. Bunyan received a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in
1925 and wanted to encourage outstanding mathematics majors to continue
their studies. . Application is in the fall of the sophomore or junior
year and selected applicants are presented the award at the annual spring
awards ceremony held at the Math House. The amount of the scholarship is
500 dollars.
Robert B. Royster Award
This award is given to a graduating math senior who intends
to go into teaching here at the University of Kentucky.
Cliff Swauger Jr. Summer Graduate Fellowship
The department will award to students one or more summer
research fellowships each year to graduate students pursuing
their doctoral degree. Summer support
will enable qualified graduate students to pursue thesis
research, attend conferences and workshops, and pursue other activities
related to their graduate training. Cliff served many years
as Associate Dean for Finance and Administration in the
College of Arts and Sciences here at UK.
Max Steckler Fellowship
For graduate fellowships in the Graduate School. The fellowships will be
awarded to graduate students in Chemistry, or any other related
division such as Biochemistry, Physics, or any of its related divisions.
J.C. Eaves Scholarship
This scholarship is intended for students who are graduates of any
high school in the Commonwealth of Kentucky (with preference for
otherwise qualified students from Muhlenberg, Taylor or Adair counties),
who are Junior or Senior level Arts and Science students majoring in Mathematics and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Financial need may be a consideration in awarding this scholarship.
