Day 1: (introduction and guiding principles): 9-5 August 18, location CB 341

 

1.  General introduction of the Fellows, PIs, faculty, and the program itself

2.  Inquiry based/conceptual approaches to mathematics with examples

3.  Inquiry based/conceptual based approaches to science and engineering (Osborn, Lineberry)

4.  Discuss and distribute NCTM Principles and Standards

5.  Discuss Expectations of Fellows and Teachers.

6.  Sheri Rhine (3pm) to talk about coupons and the mechanics of getting paid and reimbursement for travel.

 

Day 2(conceptual mathematics, project evaluation, and mentoring), August 19, 9-5, location CB 341

 

1.  Mentoring (9 am- 10 am, Osborn):  The structure, purpose, responsibilities, and practice of mentoring. 

2. Reactions by the CUBEs to case studies

3.  Role of assessment and evaluation portion of the project (Ma, 10:30). 

4. A specific conceptual mathematics “lesson” will be discussed.

 

Day 3 (math and life in grades 6-12): 3 to 7 pm , August 20 location CB 341 (Prater)

 

1. Mathematics (especially algebra) journey of the students in middle and high school including discussing the Kentucky Core Content with a focus on algebra.

2. Life at middle and high school. What do rural schools look like today?

3. How students generally act, appropriate behavior and boundaries for Fellows, issues of classroom management, understanding the special needs students and, especially, cultural differences.

 

Day 4 (Powell school visit), August 22, arrive PCMS at 8:30 am, return by 4

 

Visit Powell County Schools (Leep and all Fellows) to meet teachers and some students informally.

 

 

 

Day 5 (Meeting with the Teacher Mentors and Cubes, Panel discussions, Lesson Examples): 8:30 am to 1 pm, August 23, Fairfield Inn, Mt. Sterling (Grogan) See that agenda

 

Day 6 (Devising a Conceptual Lesson), 9-noon, August 25, location CB 341

 

1. Working in small groups, CUBEs, with minimal advice from PIs and faculty, give a conceptual approach to an algebra topic following Day 3 discussions. (Millman) Do this as homework in small groups. Handle in Japanese lesson study mode with a second version done the next day 

 

Day 7 (General Wrap up) August 26, (1-4 pm)  location CB 242 

 

1. Grant Writing seminar

2. Discussion of the events of the orientation and ALG3 projects, the coming school visits, and the continuing desire of the Fellows and teachers to be a part of the project.

3.  ALGEBRA CUBED website will be discussed

4. Agenda for the visits to schools of 9.

5. Repeat of one practice lesson in the style of Japanese Lesson Study.

 

 

Day 8  (Bath school visit), August 28, Thursday, arrive BCHS at 8:30 am, return by 4

 

Visit Bath County Schools (Leep and all Fellows) to meet teachers and some students informally. 

 

Day 9 and 10 during week of September 1. 

 

Visit the Schools again with open schedules and classroom observations. Plan your own times, Tuesday through Friday.

Final match up of Teacher Mentors and Fellows taking into account the preferences of the TM, Cube Fellows, and the needs of the schools will be done as soon as possible after Day 8.

 

For the CUBEs, the “first of week of classes” in their Teacher Mentor’s classroom will be the week of September 8.
