Text: Calculus 5th
edition, by James Stewart
Outline of Content: Chapter 13
Analytic geometry and vectors in
2 and 3 dimensions; Chapter 14 Differential calculus of vector valued functions
of 1 variable; Chapter 15 Differential
calculus of real valued functions of several variables; Chapter 16 Integral
calculus of real valued functions of several variables; Chapter 17 Sections 1 thru 4 Introduction to Vector Calculus
Course Goals: The third semester
of calculus is an introduction to the calculus of several variables. The principal goals are to become familiar
with the vector geometry and algebra of two and three dimensional spaces; the
concepts, basic theorems and some applications of partial differentiation and multiple integration; and the calculus of vector-valued
functions of one or more variables. You should work to achieve a level
of understanding that will enable you to apply your knowledge to settings
beyond this course.
Exam Schedule:
There will be two inclass midterm
examinations: The dates are September 26
and October 31.
Final Exam The
final exam is on Wednesday December 12 from 1 to 3 pm. It is a comprehensive exam.
Homework and quizzes: There will be assignments at least once
a week which you will do using the online homework system
at http://www.mathclass.org. You
will automatically be registered in mathclass within a day of enrolling in the
class. It is a good idea to print the
homework and work out the answers by hand, then log back into mathclass and
submit your answers. If you miss a problem, you can rework it and submit your
answer again for full credit, until the deadline, usually midnight on
Tuesday. Submissions after the
deadline are not recorded.
Grading and exams: Each of
the 2 midterm exams is 22.5%. Mathclass homework
is 10%. Other homework, quizzes and
Recitation is 15%. The final is 30%. Grades are determined on the scale:
90-100% A, 80-89.9% B, 70-79.9% C, 60-69.9% D and otherwise E.
Code of Behavior: Everyone is expected to come to class on time and
show respect for others in the class. Do not talk unnecessarily during class.
All cell phones must be off during class. Do not leave class early except in an
emergency. I encourage you to study
together and work on the common version of the homework, but answers to your
personal homework and all quiz and exam work that you submit must be your own. Cheaters will be punished following
University regulations: see here
Advice: Apply good study skills from the start. Come
to class, read the text and do the homework on time. Form study groups with
classmates. Seek help without delay if you have trouble.
Important Dates: Labor Day Sept 3, Midterm
