General Information
The University of Kentucky Department of Mathematics organizes student teams for annual mathematical problem solving contests. For UK students, all of these contests are held at UK.
Fall Contests
Come back in Fall 2011 for more information!
Spring Contests
- The Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications administers the Mathematical Contest in Modeling
- The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (aka MCM) is held during the first or second weekend of February and consists of multiple days of competition. The MCM involves students working in small teams during a 96 hour window to solve a selection of interesting modeling problems.
If you are interested in the MCM, email Alan Demlow or Jeff Ovall.
Why Participate?
Here are some reasons you might consider participating in one, two, or all three of these contests:
- Many students enjoy working hard on problems that are not required for courses. These contests provide problems that are challenging, interesting, and fun to work on!
- If you are going to graduate school in mathematics, they will notice this (it is a sign of genuine interest in mathematics if you participate).
- If you are going to teach high school, your talented students will be doing high school level math competitions and it will be good for you to be able to share personal experiences with them.
- If you are going to work in industry, companies want people who like to solve problems. This is good practice for such things and is again a sign of genuine interest in mathematics and modeling.
