Calculus 1

Syllabus

Textbook Calculus by G.B. Thomas and R.L. Finney, 9th edition,
Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, ISBN # 0-201-53175-5.

Lectures Section 007: MWF 9:10-10:00AM, C002 WIL.

Section 017: MWF 11:30AM-12:20PM, C314 Wells Hall.
Office hours: MWF 10:20-11:10AM, A307 Wells Hall.

Policy The final grade for the course will be based on:

- three midterms (90 points each);
- quizzes + homework + 2 gateway exams (130 = 50 + 50 + 30 points);
- uniform comprehensive final exam (200 points).

Usual grading scale:
4.0 = 90 - 100 %     3.5 = 83 - 89 %     3.0 = 75 - 82 %     2.5 = 68 - 74 %
2.0 = 60 - 67 %       1.5 = 55 - 59 %     1.0 = 50 - 54 %     0.0 = 0 - 49 %

You are expected to attend every class and to read the appropriate sections of the text before coming to class.
Attendance and active participation to class life will be also taken into consideration when computing the final grade.

All exams are closed-book. No cheat-sheets and notes are allowed. You must bring your picture I.D. card to every exam. Make-up exams will be given only in case of an emergency or if a valid excuse is given and verified in advance.

Homework will be mandatory and WILL be collected once a week; also, the weekly quizzes will be based on the homework assignments. You are free to (and encouraged to) work together on the homework assignments.

I expect that you spend about two hours studying for every hour of classtime.

Gateway Exams You will be expected to take (and pass) 2 gateway exams.
Gateway exams test essential skills for completion of the course. The first tests your knowledge of algebra and the second tests your proficiency in differentiation. More details will be provided later but feel free to look at the department's explanation.
