Dear Mathematics Faculty,

Mary Beth Thomson, UK Libraries' Associate Dean for Collections and Technical Services, has asked the Science Library to suggest cancellation of 14.5% of its journal subscriptions and standing orders. According to Tom Hecker, this amounts to a total of $41,900 for mathematics.

Last year the Mathematics Dept. submitted a list of cancellations that totaled $22,710.76. However, due to an infusion of additional money by the Provost, these cancellations were not made and thus they can apply to the cancellations we are expected to list this year.

At present, the library does not know what the State allocation will be and we are told that journals identified for cancellation may not be canceled if sufficient funds are available. However, it is safe to say that anything on our list will be gone for good sooner or later.

I have posted an Excel file listing our current Journal and monograph series subscriptions in the order of their cost at http://www.ms.uky.edu/~larry/library/ . Titles marked in red are already on the cancellation list submitted last year. I have also included a copy of this list at the site.

Please go through the Excel file and suggest items in your area that you feel could be canceled. As in past years, I will collect your suggestions and circulate a list of possible cancellations. After this has been circulated, you may remove an item from the list by suggesting alternatives for the same amount that the faculty in your area approve. Our recommendations need to be submitted by the end of April.

Thank you for your cooperation and help in this painful exercise.

Larry
