This letter is mailed to all international applicants living overseas
who request information about our graduate program. You may also view the
documents that we enclose with this letter. Once you are familiar with
these documents, you should visit the International
Applicant's Menu of The Graduate School's Online Application Forms.
Dear Student:
Thank you for your inquiry about the graduate program in mathematics.
I have enclosed information and application forms. Before you spend a substantial
amount of time and money on this process, there is some information which
you should have.
For several years, there has been an over-production of mathematics
Ph.D.'s by American universities. Last year, the unemployment rate among
new mathematics Ph.D.'s was 10%. For this reason, we are reducing the number
of Ph.D. students in our program. We will accept very few students who
are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Any international student
accepted must have:
-
Excellent spoken English;
-
Outstanding mathematical abilities.
Before we will consider an application, an international student must submit:
-
Scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); we
recommend submission of scores on the Mathematics Subject Test as well.
-
Scores on both the TOEFL Examination and the Test of Spoken English (TSE).
-
An application fee of $35. (Please note that this fee must be submitted
before the application will be considered.)
Given these difficulties, I urge you to consider carefully whether you
wish to apply.
