Dear Student:

Thank you for your inquiry about the graduate program in mathematics. I have enclosed information and application forms. Before you spend a substantial amount of time and money on this process, there is some information which you should have.

For several years, there has been an over-production of mathematics Ph.D.'s by American universities. Last year, the unemployment rate among new mathematics Ph.D.'s was 10%. For this reason, we are reducing the number of Ph.D. students in our program. We will accept very few students who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
