High school mathematics day

The Department of Mathematics and the College of Engineering will host a morning of activities for high school students with an interest in mathematics. The day will begin with an individual problem solving competition. The contest problems will be accessible to students who have studied algebra and geometry and many will only require a good command of arithmetic. Prizes will be awarded to top individuals and schools.

The rest of the morning will include presentations and activities by UK faculty and students to introduce our guests to some interesting areas of mathematics.

Mathematics Day will take place from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm on Saturday, November 8 on the UK campus.

We request that participants pre-register to participate. We will accept registrations from individuals or schools. There is no registration fee, but spaces are limited. More information including the details of the registration process may be found at http://www.math.uky.edu/Undergrad/mathday/. Please contact Russell Brown, russell.brown@uky.edu or +1 859 257 3951 for more information.

Mathematics meetings in Lexington

In the spring of 2010, the University of Kentucky will host two regional mathematics meetings. The Kentucky Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) will hold its annual meeting on the 26 and 27 March 2010 and the American Mathematics Society (AMS) will hold the 2010 Spring Southeastern Sectional meeting on 27 and 28 March. By holding these meetings in the same location, we hope to help strengthen ties between the Kentucky mathematics community and mathematicians from outside the state.
