Any good references for all this stuff?

These are the books I'd most recommend to those who are interested in further reading. Patrick Ion of the AMS generously provided the full references. Some of the references are slightly incomplete and will be patched presently.

  • Oxley, James G. Matroid Theory. Oxford Science Publications. The Clarendon Press, Oxford University Press, New York, 1992. xii+532 pp. ISBN: 0-19-853563-5;MR 94d:05033. A great first book on matroids; the book I refer to most often. Well-written, many good examples, very thorough treatment. Lots of excellent exercises for study. I'd recommend this book in an instant. It also contains a chapter on unsolved questions in the field (some of which have already been answered).
  • Welsh, D. J. A. Matroid theory. L. M. S. Monographs, No. 8. Academic Press [Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Publishers], London-New York, 1976. xi+433 pp; MR 55 #148. This was, as I understand it, the first book to really put together all the main known things about matroids into one book, and thus it was a landmark publication. Last I knew, it was out of print. Drat.
  • Hartsfield, Nora; Ringel, Gerhard Pearls in graph theory. A comprehensive introduction. Revised reprint of the 1990 original. Academic Press, Inc., Boston, MA, 1994. x+249 pp. ISBN: 0-12-328553-4; MR 95k:05046. An excellent all-around text for graph theory; highly recommended.

Here are some of the papers to which I've referred above. As before, Patrick Ion contributed the full references; Jamas Enright provided me with some of the link addresses.

The following three articles are those of my thesis advisor, Thomas Zaslavsky. These give the reader a thorough introduction to biased graphs and signed graphs and their matroids.

These next two references are those of Geoff Whittle. My entire research career has been predicated upon linking the results of Whittle with those of Zaslavsky.

There are a number of other works I've used from time to time, and should I want to make this section longer, I'll add them in, or perhaps just come up with an extra page of just those references. Oxley's work above is laden with references.
