1998 Summer Program
The departments of Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering at the
University of Kentucky will offer a summer REU (Research Experiences for
Undergraduates) program June 10 - August 7, 1998. The program is funded
by the National Science Foundation.
REU fel
lows
will be offered a stipend of $2500 for the eight-week program, plus a housing
allowance of $500. Fellows will work closely with a faculty mentor on a
research project involving inverse problems or
dynamical systems; faculty mentors from the departments of Mathematics,
Mechanical Engineering, and the Wenner-Gren Graduate Center for Biomedical
Engineering will direct student research.
June 10--12 is an orientation period to the program, the facilities of the
University of Kentucky, and the area of inverse problems and dynamical
systems. At the
end of this period, faculty from Mathematics and Engineering will present
possible research projects.
Each student will then select one of these projects
and begin work with a faculty mentor. In addition to the individual
research, there will be frequent informal group activities such as weekly
lunches with other students and faculty, and more structured activities
such as lectures and workshops.
Program activities will include:
- Workshop on using MAPLE and MATLAB
- Lectures on the Mathematics of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems
- Workshop on Giving a Technical Presentation
- Workshop on Scientific Writing
- Round Table Discussion: Life in Graduate School and Careers in
Science
Applications are due March 15, 1998.
Due to funding considerations, only one student will be sponsored by
the University of Kentucky NSF-REU program. Kentucky residents, however,
may be eligible to apply for a parallel program sponsored by the
Graduate School at the University of Kentucky, the Kentucky Young
Scientist Summer Research Program (KYSS).

Activities for the KYSS summer mathematics are the same as those for the
NSF-REU program, including individual research and group activities.
The application deadline for KYSS is also March 15, 1998.
