- Textbook:
A First Course in Abstract Algebra:
By Fraleigh.
- Syllabus:
I expect to cover the chapters 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10 of the book. I will cover
additional topics based on personal notes when appropriate.
Check the course calendar for further details.
- Structure
of the course: There will be regularly assigned
homework.
Homework: There will be a total of 5 homework assignments as listed
in the calendar.
Exams: There will be three exams, two midterms and a final. In
addition, active participation in class is an important part of the
course.
- Grades: The three exams shall be worth 100 points each, the homework shall be
worth 80 points also. Class attendance and participation will be worth 20
points.
Thus, the final grade shall be on the usual scale E (0-239), D (240-279),
C (280-319), B (320-359), A (360-400).
- Note:
This is a sequel to MA 361, so you already have exposure to formal proofs.
The requirement for a formal correct proof will be more pronounced in this
course. Learning how to say things is almost as important as learning
what to say.
One
of the simplest way to success is to know the precise definitions and statements
of theorems. Please make
an attempt to ask for and retain these all the time.
