Ambridge Area High School, PA ~ valedictorian class of 2000 Wheeling Jesuit University, WV ~ 2004, B.S. in mathematics, minor in computer science University of Kentucky ~ M.S. in mathematics I have been married three years to my husband Matt. (The marriage let me drop my maiden name of Dziabiak, but my signature didn’t get any shorter.) We are the proud parents of a three-year-old kitty named Caramel (she has caramel and white coloring – go figure). Matt just smiles and nods when I talk math, and Caramel’s only math interests are my writing utensils. I am currently a graduate student at UK, ready to start my 4th year, and I am interested in discrete math, algebra, topology, and definitely teaching. In college, my work-study job was tutoring math and computer science (and a little literature!) at the Academic Resource Center on campus. Loved it! For a few summers, I worked with K-12 kids just basically playing outside a few evenings a week. Besides math, my high school love was music ~ I played flute in the marching/symphonic bands, and I played the bass drums in our steel drum ensemble. (I even got to meet Ellie Mannette, who invented the instruments, and our group went to San Francisco and played before Steven Spielberg gave a speech!) Comments: I taught trigonometry and Calculus I at UK, and I’ve done recitations for Calc II and III. I want to eventually work in education at some level, maybe as a specialist in K-12 helping gifted and/or challenged students with math. I am very excited to work with pre-college students to get them loving math and to give them more confidence in their math abilities!

Maysville, Ky High school University of Kentucky, 2007 BS in Electrical Engineering I am currently pursuing my Master’s in Biomedical Engineering with a focus in signal processing, the electrical end of Biomedical Engineering. In layman’s terms, I would like to help design medical devices (e.g. pacemakers) when I’m finally finished with my college career. Outside of the academic world, I have a range of interests. Some of these include traveling (I have studied abroad twice among other excursions), basketball (what 6’5” Kentucky kid doesn’t play basketball?), water sports, and pretending I can play the guitar. I was born and raised in the town of Maysville and was a part of a graduating high school class of about 150. I can still remember pulling out of the parking lot after school was over and hearing daily battles of who had the loudest Dixie horn, the General Lee’s car horn in the Dukes of Hazzard. While in high school, I was fortunate to have excellent math teachers. I hope those I teach can look back and say the same about me. Additionally, I intend to use my engineering background to supply a different perspective on the importance of mathematics in today’s society.

I graduated from Waverly Central High School in Waverly, Tennessee. I went there only for one year, but I would determine it to be a rural high school. My graduating class was 135 students, which is small. Students came from two different towns located close to one another, New Johnsonville and Waverly. At this high school is was very easy for everyone to know everyone else, and information about everyone as well. Before I went to Waverly, I went to high school in San Jose, CA, where my graduating class would have been 450 students. I have found that there is a great difference in the two atmospheres and the students. I went to Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, for my undergraduate degree in mathematics and mathematics education. I am currently a masters student in the department of statistics. Upon graduating with my masters degree, I hope to get my doctoral degree in mathematics education. My ultimate goal is to teach at the university level. I have no children, but I do have 7 brothers and sisters, one of whom just graduated high school, one is in the eighth grade, one in the seventh grade, two in the fifth grade, one is about to enter kindergarten, and the other is out of school completely (serving as a Marine, currently). |
Pulaski Co. High school where I loved the rural setting and being involved in track, cross country, quick recall team, FCA, student council, and much more. Asbury College, 2001 BA in math, music minor. University of Kentucky, MA in math. I'm 28 with a girlfriend who just got her masters in marriage and family therapy at UK. I'm currently a math Dept graduate student in my seventh year and interested in logic and different kinds of algebra. I love to run, sing, play piano and guitar (which I play for children at my church), read, play ping pong, hike, and just hang out with family and friends. Comments: Have taught many math classes at UK from algebra to calculus to math for future teachers. I love math and am very excited about this opportunity to be a part of expanding the math world of others. I also love meeting new people, and I'm excited about this as well. |

Athens, WV Pikeview High School, 1999 Marshall University, 2003 BS in Math University of Kentucky, 2005 MS in Math I grew up in a rural area and went to a small consolidated high school. I moved a couple hours away for college. At Marshall, I decided math was for me, and since I didn't want a "real" job after graduation I came to UK for graduate school. I study Combinatorics which is essentially a fancy way of saying I count things. When I'm not at school, I enjoy reading and playing poker. (I even named my dog Brunson!) Algebra Cubed in an opportunity for me to improve myself as a teacher, and it is a chance to convince pre-university students that math is not some form of torture, but an interesting and useful subject. |
Wawasee High School, Syracuse IN, 1995 - 1999 Asbury College, Wilmore KY, B.A. Applied Math, 1999-2003 University of Kentucky, M.A. Mathematics, 2004-2006 and, M.S. Statistics 2006-Present
Syracuse, Indiana is a small lake-town in northern Indiana. The population of the town and surrounding areas double during the summer months from all the vacationers out enjoying the lake. I used to make fun of the 'lakers', as we called them, but over the past few years I've noticed that I have turned into one myself--visiting my parents and enjoying the lake. |
My name is Mark Grogan, and I am a second year mathematics graduate student at the University of Kentucky. I graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics from UK in 2006. I grew up in Winchester, KY and graduated from high school there in 2002. I now live in Winchester with my wife Mary Margaret. Math wasn’t always something that I enjoyed, but after taking my first algebra class I realized how interesting and fun the subject could be. Later when I entered high school I enrolled in every mathematics course that was available, and haven’t stopped since. As a student at the University of Kentucky, I have been lucky enough to garner a reasonable amount of experience in teaching mathematics. Resultantly I have found that teaching is something that I really love to do. I look forward to working with local high school teachers and students to develop interesting activities and to improve my abilities as an instructor. |
My name is Eric Clark and I am a math nerd from Owensboro, Kentucky. I graduated from Daviess County High school, and got a math and computer science degree from Transylvania University. I am now in my third year of math graduate school at UK. My main area of interest is combinatorics (which is just a fancy word for counting). Whenever I get the chance, I love to spend my time playing tennis, snow skiing, and playing video games (I stand by Nintendo in all of the console wars!). I’m also an avid juggler, but the juggling knives and torches will have to stay at home when I travel to school. Most importantly, I have found incredible beauty and excitement in world of mathematics and am extremely excited about Algebra Cubed, as it gives me the opportunity to share that knowledge with others!
